Artist Statement (Updated
9-20-2011):
Artticova is the deconstruction of art (my art, your art, the
art world; I have not decided yet) into nothing but signatures
(including the deconstruction of the signature itself). My art
signature is the combined initials ("RD") from my name.
This body of work is my response to the fact that most artworks contain
the artist's signature. After extensively researching this phenomenon,
I concluded that if the signature is vital, essential, of the essence,
critical, crucial, key, indispensable, integral, all-important,
imperative, mandatory, requisite, urgent, pressing, burning,
compelling, high-priority, life-and-death, of the utmost importance,
and utmost (all discussion responses), then I could make artworks using
[only] signatures.
The artwork will contain one or more fully rendered signatures and/or
portions/parts of the signature. Anything that does not look like a
signature will be an abstraction/deconstruction of the signature.
I discovered that by destroying an image with signatures, the
signatures formed a new image. Even though a paradox occurs with this
technique, my thesis remains intact in that I am replacing the original
image with signatures in a never ending cycle.
The deconstruction process involves taking a physical image and
covering it up with signatures or using an imaginary image, projecting
that image onto a canvas (or whatever ground), and covering it up.
The first version of Artticova was a conceptual project in which I
instructed the viewer to imagine the artwork. After a brief hiatus,
that version has been re-designed and is available again under the new
title "Artticova Classic".
Artticova is a multi-media project. I have illuminated at least two
mediums in this artist statement. There are more. I have elected to
produce 4,999,999 signatures on multiple grounds. The quantity is a
tribute to the year that I conceived Artticova; 1999 (and other
things).
